Zinc Sulphate

Zinc Sulphate is the standard source of zinc for correcting crop deficiency and fortifying animal feed, in heptahydrate (21% Zn) and monohydrate (33% Zn) grades.

Zinc deficiency is one of the most widespread micronutrient problems in agriculture, especially in rice, wheat and maize grown on alkaline or high-phosphate soils. Zinc sulphate is the most widely used and economical correction, applied to soil, through fertigation or as a foliar spray.

Heptahydrate (about 21% zinc) dissolves readily and suits sprays and fertigation. Monohydrate (about 33% zinc) is more concentrated and suits soil application, blending and feed premixes. Industrially it is used in viscose rayon spinning baths, electroplating and making other zinc chemicals.

Zinc Sulphate — frequently asked

Zinc sulphate heptahydrate (21% Zn) dissolves quickly and suits foliar sprays and fertigation. Monohydrate (33% Zn) is more concentrated and better for soil application, blending and feed premixes.

Zinc sulphate should not be mixed with phosphate fertilisers such as DAP in the same solution, as insoluble zinc phosphate forms and the zinc becomes unavailable. They are applied separately.

Foliar sprays commonly use about 0.5% zinc sulphate heptahydrate, often partly neutralised with lime to reduce leaf scorch. Local agronomic advice should be followed for each crop.
