Feed phosphates

Feed phosphates — monocalcium phosphate (MCP) and dicalcium phosphate (DCP) — supply digestible phosphorus and calcium in poultry, swine, cattle and aquaculture feed.

Phosphorus is essential for bone growth, energy metabolism and productivity in livestock, and plant-based feed ingredients cannot supply enough of it in a form animals can absorb. Inorganic feed phosphates fill the gap.

Monocalcium phosphate (about 22% P) is the most digestible and is preferred in poultry and especially aquaculture feed. Dicalcium phosphate (about 18% P) carries more calcium and is widely used in poultry, swine and ruminant diets. Fluorine, arsenic and heavy metals are tightly limited because they accumulate in animals.

Feed phosphates — frequently asked

Monocalcium phosphate has higher phosphorus content and digestibility, so it is preferred in poultry and aquaculture feed. Dicalcium phosphate supplies more calcium and is economical in poultry, swine and ruminant diets. The choice depends on species and diet formulation.

Phosphate rock contains fluorine, which is toxic to animals in excess and accumulates in bone and teeth. Feed phosphates are defluorinated, and regulations commonly require a phosphorus to fluorine ratio of at least 100:1.

Inclusion rates depend on species, age and the rest of the diet, but feed phosphates typically make up about 1–2% of poultry diets. Nutritionists set the level to meet available phosphorus requirements.
