Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES 70%, 2 mole) is the main foaming surfactant in shampoos, body washes, hand washes and dishwashing liquids.
SLES is made by ethoxylating lauryl alcohol and then sulphating and neutralising it. The ethoxylation — on average two moles of ethylene oxide per molecule in the standard grade — makes it milder and more water-tolerant than SLS, while keeping the rich, dense foam and strong cleaning that consumers expect.
It is supplied as a 70% active paste, which saves freight compared with dilute grades. It thickens easily with salt and pairs well with co-surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine. Buyers usually specify active matter, unsulphated matter, sodium sulphate and 1,4-dioxane level.

Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate — frequently asked
Always add SLES 70% paste slowly to water with good stirring, not water to the paste. Between roughly 30% and 60% active, SLES forms a very thick gel; adding the paste to plenty of water passes through this zone quickly.
'2 mole' means each lauryl alcohol molecule carries on average two units of ethylene oxide. Two-mole SLES is the standard grade for personal care, balancing foam, mildness and ease of thickening. Three-mole grades are milder but harder to thicken.
SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is not ethoxylated and is a harsher, more irritating surfactant. SLES has ethylene oxide units that make it milder on skin and better at tolerating hard water, so it is preferred in shampoos and body washes.
