Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB, 30% active) is a mild amphoteric surfactant that boosts foam, thickens and reduces irritation in shampoos and body washes.
CAPB is made from coconut fatty acids and dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA), then reacted with sodium chloroacetate. It is amphoteric — carrying both positive and negative charges — which makes it gentle on skin and eyes and highly compatible with anionic surfactants such as SLES.
Added to SLES at about one part CAPB to three or four parts SLES, it makes foam creamier, lets the formula thicken with less salt and lowers overall irritation. That is why it is in almost every shampoo, baby wash and facial cleanser. Low residual DMAPA and amidoamine, both known sensitisers, are the quality markers.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine — frequently asked
CAPB makes SLES milder, increases and stabilises foam, and allows the formula to thicken with less salt. A typical ratio is about one part CAPB to three or four parts SLES on an active basis.
DMAPA (dimethylaminopropylamine) is a raw material used to make CAPB. Residual DMAPA and amidoamine are known skin sensitisers, so quality CAPB keeps them at very low levels.
Standard CAPB contains about 5–6% sodium chloride from manufacture. Low-salt or salt-free grades are available on request for formulas where salt affects stability or clarity.
