Glycerine

Glycerine (glycerol) is a humectant and solvent for skin care, oral care, pharmaceuticals and food, supplied as 99.7% USP grade and technical grade.

Glycerine is a clear, sweet, viscous liquid made as a by-product of soap and biodiesel production from vegetable oils, then refined by distillation. It attracts and holds water, which makes it one of the most effective and widely used moisturising ingredients in creams, lotions, soaps and toothpaste.

USP grade (99.7%) is refined for personal care, pharmaceuticals and food, and is tested specifically for diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) — a critical safety check for any glycerine going into medicines. Technical grade serves alkyd resins, polyols, antifreeze, tobacco and other industrial uses.

Storage & handling

Keep containers closed — glycerine absorbs moisture from air. It becomes very viscous in cold weather; gentle warming restores flow.

Glycerine — frequently asked

USP glycerine is refined to 99.7% or higher and tested to the United States Pharmacopeia for personal care, pharmaceutical and food use, including limits on diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Technical glycerine has lower purity and is used in resins, antifreeze and other industrial applications.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) are toxic and have caused fatal poisonings when glycerine was contaminated or substituted. The USP requires every batch of pharmaceutical glycerine to be tested and to contain no more than 0.10% of each.
