Linalool
Linalool is a floral, fresh terpene alcohol found in lavender and bergamot — one of the most used fragrance ingredients, also used in flavours.
Linalool has a light, floral-woody odour with citrus and lavender facets. It occurs naturally in lavender, bergamot, coriander and ho wood, and is also produced synthetically. It is present in a large share of fragranced products, from fine perfume to shampoo and detergent.
Linalool is a declarable fragrance allergen in the EU above set concentrations. It oxidises in air to form sensitising hydroperoxides, so it is usually stabilised with an antioxidant and stored with minimal headspace. It is also a building block for linalyl acetate and for vitamin synthesis.

Linalool — frequently asked
Yes. Linalool is on the EU list of fragrance allergens that must be declared on cosmetic labels above 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
Linalool oxidises in air to form hydroperoxides, which are skin sensitisers. An antioxidant and storage with minimal air slow this oxidation and keep the material fresh.
Linalool is available as a synthetic material and, on request, from natural sources. The choice depends on cost, odour profile and labelling requirements.
