Aroma chemicals

Aroma chemicals are individual fragrance and flavour molecules — synthetic and nature-identical — used to build perfumes, household fragrances and flavours.

Most fragrances are built from aroma chemicals: single, well-defined molecules such as phenyl ethyl alcohol (rose), citronellol, geraniol, hexyl cinnamic aldehyde (jasmine), coumarin and esters with fruity notes. They give perfumers consistent, affordable building blocks that natural oils alone cannot provide.

Quality is judged in two ways: analytically, by GC purity and physical constants, and organoleptically, by smelling against an approved standard, because trace impurities can change an odour noticeably. Perfumery grades are supplied with IFRA documentation; flavour grades meet food regulations.
