Glycol Ethers
Glycol Ethers are coalescing and coupling solvents used in water-based paints, cleaners, inks and brake fluids, in E-series and P-series grades.
Glycol ethers combine an ether and an alcohol group in one molecule, so they mix with both water and oils. In latex paint they act as coalescents: they temporarily soften polymer particles so they fuse into a continuous film, then slowly evaporate. In cleaners they couple water and greasy soils together.
Common E-series products include butyl glycol (2-butoxyethanol) and butyl diglycol. P-series products based on propylene glycol, such as PGME, PnB and DPnB, have a better toxicological profile and are increasingly preferred. Ester-alcohol coalescents are also supplied for low-odour paints.

Glycol Ethers — frequently asked
E-series glycol ethers are made from ethylene oxide, P-series from propylene oxide. P-series products generally have lower toxicity and are increasingly specified in paints and cleaners, while E-series products such as butyl glycol remain widely used for their strong solvency.
The best coalescent depends on the binder's MFFT and the VOC limit. Butyl diglycol, DPnB and ester-alcohol coalescents are common choices, each balancing efficiency, evaporation rate and odour.
Many glycol ethers are classed as volatile organic compounds under paint VOC regulations, though definitions vary by region. Low-volatility coalescents are used to meet low-VOC targets.
