Defoamers & wetting agents
Defoamers and wetting agents are coating additives that control foam and improve pigment and substrate wetting in paints, inks and adhesives.
Foam forms during grinding, mixing, filling and application of water-based coatings, leaving pinholes, craters and inaccurate fill weights. Defoamers — based on mineral oil, silicone or polyether chemistry — break foam bubbles and stop new foam from stabilising.
Wetting and dispersing agents work at the other end: they help the paint wet pigment particles during grinding, stabilise them against flocculation, and help the finished coating spread evenly over difficult substrates. Additive choice is always a balance, because a defoamer that is too strong can cause surface defects.

Defoamers & wetting agents — frequently asked
Mineral oil defoamers are economical and effective in flat and mid-sheen paints. Silicone defoamers are more efficient at low doses and suit gloss systems, but an incompatible silicone can cause craters and fish-eyes, so compatibility testing is essential.
Defoamer is often split: part is added in the grind to control foam during dispersion, and the rest in the let-down to prevent foam during filling and application.
Yes. Samples of defoamers and wetting agents are provided so their efficiency and compatibility can be tested in your own formulation before ordering.
