CAS 1314-13-2
Zinc Oxide
Zinc Oxide is the essential activator for sulphur vulcanisation of rubber, also used in ceramics, paints and other applications, supplied in rubber and activator grades.
In sulphur-cured rubber, zinc oxide reacts with stearic acid to form zinc stearate, which activates the accelerators and makes crosslinking efficient. Typical loadings are 3–5 parts per hundred rubber. Without it, vulcanisation is slow and the rubber's properties are poor.
Purity, particle size and surface area determine how quickly and evenly it works; high-surface-area 'active' zinc oxide lets compounders use less. Zinc oxide is also used in ceramic glazes, paints, adhesives and as a zinc source in other industries, with feed and pharmaceutical uses requiring their own grades.

Zinc Oxide — frequently asked
Zinc oxide and stearic acid react to form zinc stearate, which activates sulphur vulcanisation accelerators. Together they make curing fast and efficient and improve the final rubber properties.
Active zinc oxide has a much higher specific surface area than standard grades, so it reacts more efficiently. Compounders can use less zinc oxide, which reduces zinc content in the rubber.
Zinc oxide is typically used at about 3–5 parts per hundred rubber with 1–2 phr of stearic acid, depending on the polymer and cure system.
