Carbon Black

Carbon Black is the main reinforcing filler for rubber — tyres, belts, hoses and moulded goods — supplied in grades such as N330, N550 and N660.

Carbon black is nearly pure carbon produced by partially burning heavy oil feedstock. Its tiny particles bond to rubber and multiply its tensile strength, tear resistance and abrasion resistance — rubber without carbon black would wear out in a fraction of the time. It also colours rubber black and protects it from UV.

Grades are classified by ASTM D1765. The 'N' series number indicates particle size: lower numbers are finer and more reinforcing. N330 (HAF) is used in tyre treads and mechanical goods; N550 (FEF) gives smooth extrusion for hoses, profiles and inner liners; N660 (GPF) is a general-purpose grade for carcasses, sidewalls and moulded parts.

Carbon Black — frequently asked

N330 is used where high reinforcement and abrasion resistance are needed, such as tyre treads and mechanical goods. N550 gives smooth extrusion for hoses and profiles. N660 is a general-purpose grade for sidewalls, carcasses and moulded parts.

Under ASTM D1765, the first digit after 'N' indicates the average particle size range. Lower numbers mean smaller particles and higher reinforcement. The other digits identify the specific grade.

Rubber-grade carbon black is supplied pelletised, which flows better, produces much less dust and handles well in bulk systems.
