Vat Dyes
Vat Dyes give the highest wash and light fastness on cotton, used for workwear, uniforms, towels and denim, supplied as powders and pastes.
Vat dyes are insoluble pigments that are temporarily made soluble by reduction with sodium hydrosulphite and caustic soda — the 'vatting' step. In this leuco form they penetrate cotton; they are then oxidised back to the insoluble pigment inside the fibre, where they are trapped permanently.
The result is the best all-round fastness of any cotton dye class, including resistance to chlorine bleach and industrial laundering. That is why vat dyes are used for workwear, military uniforms, hospital textiles, towels and premium shirting. Indigo, the denim dye, is the best-known vat dye. Paste grades suit continuous dyeing and printing.

Vat Dyes — frequently asked
Vat dyes have the highest overall fastness on cotton, including resistance to industrial washing, chlorine bleach and sunlight. Workwear and uniforms keep their colour through hundreds of wash cycles.
Vat dyes are reduced with sodium hydrosulphite and caustic soda to their soluble leuco form, dyed onto cotton, and then oxidised back with air or hydrogen peroxide. Soaping at the end develops the final shade and fastness.
Yes. Indigo, the dye used for denim, is a vat dye. It is applied in multiple dips with air oxidation between them, which builds the characteristic ring-dyed effect that gives denim its fading.
