Direct Dyes
Direct Dyes colour cotton, viscose and paper without a mordant, supplied in standard and light-fast ranges as an economical choice for cellulosic fibres.
Direct dyes are long, flat anionic molecules with a natural affinity for cellulose. They dye cotton, viscose, linen and paper simply from a hot bath with salt, without the alkali fixation that reactive dyes need. That makes the process short, cheap and forgiving.
Their weakness is wet fastness, because the dye is held by physical attraction rather than a chemical bond. A cationic after-fix treatment improves it considerably. Light-fast ranges are used for upholstery, curtains and other end uses exposed to sunlight; liquid direct dyes are widely used in paper mills.

Direct Dyes — frequently asked
Treating the dyed fabric with a cationic fixing agent after dyeing locks the anionic direct dye in place and markedly improves wash and wet-rub fastness. Copper after-treatment is used for some light-fast dyes.
Cotton takes on a negative surface charge in water that repels anionic direct dyes. Salt suppresses that charge so the dye can approach and exhaust onto the fibre.
Direct dyes are cheaper and simpler to apply but have lower wash fastness. Reactive dyes form a covalent bond with cotton and give much higher wash fastness, so they are standard for garments that will be laundered often.
