Solvent Dyes
Solvent Dyes are oil- and polymer-soluble dyes used to colour plastics, fuels, lubricants, inks, waxes and wood stains with transparent, brilliant shades.
Solvent dyes are insoluble in water but dissolve in organic solvents, oils and molten polymers. Because they dissolve rather than disperse, they give transparent, brilliant colour, which is why they are used for clear and tinted plastics, coloured fuels and lubricants, and transparent inks and lacquers.
For plastics, the key properties are heat stability — engineering polymers are processed at 280 °C and above — and resistance to migration. Solvent dyes work well in polystyrene, ABS, polycarbonate, PET and acrylics; polyolefins such as PE and PP are normally coloured with pigments instead because dyes can migrate.

Solvent Dyes — frequently asked
Solvent dyes are used in amorphous and engineering plastics such as polystyrene, ABS, polycarbonate, PET, PMMA and some polyamides. In polyethylene and polypropylene they tend to migrate, so pigments are normally used.
Heat stability depends on the dye and polymer. Many solvent dyes are stable at 280–300 °C, and selected grades up to about 320 °C for engineering plastics such as polycarbonate.
Yes. Oil-soluble solvent dyes are used to colour petrol, diesel, kerosene and lubricants for identification and tax-marking purposes.
