Sodium Starch Glycolate
Sodium Starch Glycolate (SSG) is a superdisintegrant that makes tablets and capsules break apart quickly, supplied to Ph. Eur. Type A specification.
Sodium starch glycolate is a cross-linked, carboxymethylated potato or other starch. In contact with water it swells rapidly to many times its size, pushing tablet particles apart so the tablet disintegrates and the API can dissolve. It is effective at low levels — typically 2–8% of the tablet weight.
The Ph. Eur. defines Type A and Type B, which differ in pH and sodium content. SSG works in both direct compression and wet granulation, and can be added inside the granules, outside them, or split between the two.

Sodium Starch Glycolate — frequently asked
Type A sodium starch glycolate has a pH of 5.5–7.5 and sodium content of 2.8–4.2%. Type B has a pH of 3.0–5.0 and sodium content of 2.0–3.4%. Type A is the more widely used grade.
Sodium starch glycolate is normally used at 2–8% of the tablet weight, with about 4% a common starting point. Higher levels can slow disintegration by forming a gel layer.
Sodium starch glycolate can be added intragranularly, extragranularly or split between both. Splitting is common and gives fast break-up of the tablet followed by break-up of the granules.
