Magnesium Stearate

Magnesium Stearate is the most common tablet and capsule lubricant, preventing sticking to punches and dies, supplied to Ph. Eur./USP-NF from vegetable sources.

Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic and palmitic acids. Added at around 0.25–2% to a tablet blend, it coats particles and machine surfaces so tablets eject cleanly and powders flow evenly into dies and capsules.

It is very effective, but more is not better. Because it is hydrophobic, too much or too long a blending time coats particles in a water-repellent film, which softens tablets and slows dissolution. Blending is normally limited to a few minutes at the end of the process. Vegetable-source grades meet Halal, Kosher and vegetarian requirements.

Magnesium Stearate — frequently asked

Magnesium stearate is typically used at 0.25–2% of the tablet weight, most often around 0.5–1%. The lowest effective level is preferred because excess slows dissolution and softens tablets.

Over-blending spreads a hydrophobic film of magnesium stearate over the particles, reducing tablet hardness and slowing disintegration and dissolution. It is usually blended for only two to five minutes at the end.
