Ferric Chloride
Ferric Chloride is an iron-based coagulant supplied as a 40% solution, used for phosphorus removal, sludge conditioning, odour control and metal etching.
Ferric chloride (FeCl₃) hydrolyses in water to form iron hydroxide floc that sweeps out suspended solids, colour and — most usefully — dissolved phosphate, which precipitates as insoluble iron phosphate. It coagulates effectively across a broad pH range, so it is a workhorse in municipal sewage plants with phosphorus discharge limits.
The same chemistry makes it a strong conditioning agent for sludge ahead of filter presses and centrifuges, and the ferric ion oxidises and binds sulphide, controlling hydrogen sulphide odour in sewers and digesters. Outside water treatment, 40% ferric chloride is the standard etchant for copper printed circuit boards and photo-etched metal parts.

Ferric Chloride — frequently asked
Yes. Ferric chloride solution ships as UN 2582, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group III. The IMDG declaration, labelling and UN-approved packaging are prepared before the container is booked.
Ferric chloride is usually preferred where phosphorus removal, sludge conditioning or sulphide control is the goal, and where a wide pH range is needed. PAC is preferred for potable water where iron residue or colour in the treated water would be a problem.
Yes. 40% ferric chloride is the standard copper etchant for printed circuit boards and photochemical machining. Etch rate depends on temperature, agitation and dissolved copper, so the solution is replaced or regenerated as it loads up.
Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Ferric Chloride (CAS 7705-08-0) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Water Treatment. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
Every shipment of Ferric Chloride from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
