Caustic Soda

Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide) is the most widely used strong alkali, supplied as flakes, pearls and 48% lye for alumina refining, detergents, textiles, mining and pH control.

Caustic soda, NaOH, is produced by electrolysis of brine. Modern membrane-cell plants give a high-purity product with very low chloride and iron, which matters in pharmaceuticals, food processing and rayon. It is sold as solid flakes, as small free-flowing pearls (prills), or as a 48–50% solution (lye) for buyers with bulk storage.

Its uses are enormous: digesting bauxite in alumina refineries, saponifying fats into soap, mercerising and scouring cotton, pulping wood, neutralising acids in effluent, adjusting pH in flotation and making a long list of sodium chemicals. It is highly corrosive and generates a great deal of heat on dissolving, so handling procedures matter as much as purity.

Storage & handling

Keep sealed — caustic soda absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air. Store away from acids, aluminium and zinc. Classified as corrosive: UN 1823 (solid) or UN 1824 (solution), Class 8.

Caustic Soda — frequently asked

Flakes and pearls carry 98% or more NaOH, so they are the most economical form to ship long distances. Pearls flow freely and suit automatic dosing. Lye (48–50% solution) avoids dissolving and the heat that comes with it, but needs bulk tanks and ships half water.

Yes. Solid caustic soda ships as UN 1823 and solution as UN 1824, both Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II. UN-approved packaging, labels and the IMDG declaration are prepared for every shipment.

Always add caustic soda slowly to water, never water to caustic soda, with stirring. Dissolving releases a lot of heat and can boil and spatter. Face shield, chemical goggles and alkali-resistant gloves are essential.

Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Caustic Soda (CAS 1310-73-2) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Mining & Oil Drilling, Basic Industrial Chemicals. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Caustic Soda from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
