Barite

Barite (barium sulphate) is the standard weighting agent for oil and gas drilling fluids, supplied to API 13A specification at 4.2 specific gravity.

Barite is a naturally occurring barium sulphate mineral, mined, cleaned and ground to a controlled fineness. Its value to a driller is density: with a specific gravity of 4.2, it raises the weight of drilling mud so that the column of fluid holds back formation pressure, prevents blowouts and keeps the well bore stable. It is chemically inert, insoluble and non-abrasive enough for mud pumps.

The API 13A specification sets the limits that matter downhole — minimum density, coarse and fine particle limits, and a cap on water-soluble calcium, which would otherwise interfere with mud chemistry. Outside drilling, the same mineral is used as a dense filler in paints, plastics and rubber, and in radiation-shielding concrete.

Typical applications

  • Weighting agent in water- and oil-based drilling muds
  • Kill fluids and well control
  • High-density filler in paints, plastics and rubber
  • Radiation-shielding and high-density concrete
  • Raw material for barium chemicals

Packing options

  • 25 kg & 50 kg bags
  • 1–1.5 tonne jumbo bags
  • Bulk for large campaigns

Storage & handling

Store dry on pallets. Barite is non-hazardous and chemically stable, but damp powder cakes and flows poorly through bulk systems.

Documentation

Barite — frequently asked

API Specification 13A defines the minimum quality of drilling fluid materials. For barite it sets the minimum density (4.20 g/cm³, or 4.10 for the alternative grade), limits on coarse particles above 75 µm and fine particles below 6 µm, and a maximum of 250 mg/kg water-soluble alkaline earth metals measured as calcium.

4.2 SG barite is the standard API grade and needs less material to reach a given mud weight. 4.1 SG barite was added to API 13A to widen supply from lower-grade ore; it is cheaper but requires slightly more product per barrel and adds more solids to the mud.

Yes. Ground barite is used as a dense, inert filler in paints, powder coatings, plastics and rubber, as aggregate in radiation-shielding concrete, and as feedstock for barium compounds.

Yes. Chemtrade manufactures and exports Barite (CAS 7727-43-7) from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in Mining & Oil Drilling. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Barite from Chemtrade includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
